We also introduced an events brochure, which we hope you received in the post last summer, outlining our growing programme of activities. As many of you will know, I have been on maternity leave since October, and for the last eight months Jennifer Robinson has been delivering the events programme. I would like to thank Jennifer for all her hard work keeping everything running so smoothly. Events this year have included:
- Young Hillians and Sixth Form BBQ
- Rohilla Day Annual Autumn Reunion
- Music on the Hill: Brooks Williams
- The Veritas Building opening
Coming soon:
- Kingham Hillians AGM and Reunion – Saturday 6 June 2015
- Hillians and Sixth Form Quiz Night – Saturday 6 June 2015
- Speech Day Cricket and Hockey Matches – Saturday 4 July 2015
- Royal International Air Tattoo – Saturday 18 July 2015
Looking ahead, our aims for the next twelve months are to:
- Increase attendance at events;
- Improve communications with members;
- Continue to recruit new committee members.
Following a recruitment drive last autumn, we have enjoyed some success with regards to this last point and we were very pleased to welcome new faces to Committee meetings in January and March. Mark Foley (1963-1969, Head Boy 1969), David Nock (Plymouth 1970 – 1971, Norwich 1971 – 1977, Head Boy 1977), Malcolm Brecht (Plymouth 1975-1977, Clyde 1977-1983, Head Boy 1983), Jan Sindhar (Sheffield 2008-2012, Head Boy 2012) have been co-opted onto the Committee subject to election at the AGM. However, we hope that we will welcome other volunteers in the future as we continue to seek new members for the Committee. If you would be interested in becoming involved, please do contact the Development Office.
It was with great sadness that we learnt of the deaths of a number of members of our community over the last twelve months, including Robert (Bob) Hughes, Honorary President of Kingham Hillians. President since 2008, Bob dedicated his time selflessly in support of his fellow former pupils and will be missed by all who knew him. Bob, and all friends who have died this year, will be remembered on Rohilla Day on Sunday 27 September.
John Hughes has been nominated by the Committee to take over the role of President. John has been involved with the KH since the early 1940s and like his brother Bob, John has given of his time selflessly over many years. It is for this reason that the Committee felt that he is the natural successor for this figurehead role.
Thank you, as ever, to the Committee for their service and dedication to the Hillians and to the School, and to all former pupils for their on-going support.

Headmaster’s Report
After several years of dreaming, planning, and hard work, our new Veritas Building was completed early in the calendar year. Designed by a Hillian, Mark Foley, this fantastic facility has given all of us who love the School, and are passionate about its past and future, a real encouragement as we see our 2020 Vision take physical shape. Reality can often not live up to expectations, but Veritas is quite the opposite, and pupils, staff, and alumni alike have been excited and inspired with the new environment in which Mathematics and Science now take place. It is really the cornerstone of our development programme, and unlocks the potential of the site to be fully exploited to serve KHS as we move confidently into the future.
As ever, it is good to be reminded of the purpose of our 2020 Vision, which is to continue and support the work the Founder began in the preaching of the Gospel to pupils, and the provision of a family home to those in boarding need. In very different economic times we need to be generating our own income to continue that work, which we now do successfully through careful strategic planning and management of our resources. That strategy involves growth, and we continue to see rising interest in places at the School, and we are hopeful for another record roll this September. It also involves working to raise standards continually – we were much encouraged by a recent ISI report which praised our pupils’ outstanding personal development, and their progress and maturity generally. We now aspire to turn some of the ’goods’ to ‘excellent’ in our next rating. Perhaps most exciting is the number of high-quality staff who continue to be attracted to working at KHS, and their work is what our future success will be built on.
Outside of the classroom, pupils enjoy a wide range of sport, performing arts, and service activities. The CCF continues to grow, with a successful biennial inspection overseen by a three-star general recently. One of our Sixth Formers won a prized RAF scholarship and flew solo before taking his A Levels. In sport, our First XI football team were unbeaten on their tour of Germany (not many English teams can boast that!), although the First XV and girls’ senior sports teams found things more of a struggle this season. One senior girl did win a very prestigious Athletics scholarship to Richmond University in Virginia. Where Drama is concerned, I thought the standard of acting in the School production of The Crucible this year was as high as I’ve ever seen, thanks to a talented group of Sixth Formers, and the Choir is larger, more proficient, and more ambitious with each passing term.
We are looking forward to further developments to our buildings later this year, with the old Maths and Science block currently undergoing refurbishment to house Havelock and Clyde, the day boys’ houses. Work on the new Library will be able to start after that. All of this of course is a means to an end – we work hard at our strategy so that we can make places available to those who cannot afford the fees. Currently the School gives 15% of its revenue towards concessions, discounts, and bursaries. With the support of other charities and alumni, this means we are able to make a Kingham education affordable to many, including a good number who are fully supported. Although efforts to bring Local Authorities on board are painfully slow, we are making progress – and Rome wasn’t built in a day. As I come to the end of my seventh year as Headmaster, I’m more optimistic than ever that God is ‘doing more than we ask or imagine’ at KHS, as we seek His will and purpose for the School and the continuance of the Founder’s work.

Archive Report
Since the last AGM a great deal of effort has been put in to getting material into electronic form.
Material scanned to date: -
4,747 text pages
3,304 photos with information
72 photos without text information (collecting info)
This is a total of 8,123 documents!
The intention is to have these documents kept on the computers in the Archive Room where they will be accessible for future archivists and most importantly as a record of the school's history.
Some members have been given a letter or e-mailed asking if they would mind writing a short piece describing their time on The Hill. I have created a folder in the Archives for old boys and girls, members of staff and people who have worked on The Hill. Hopefully this will create interesting reading from over the years with the mixture of perspectives.
Last year I put out a request if any one might know where to find photos of some Headmasters/Wardens.
I have found photographs of most Headmasters/Wardens. Two are missing: Mr T Benfield (there is a group photo of Mr Benfield but quality is poor) and Rev. C.R. Forrester. Mr J. Woollan and Mr J Mash need to be re-scanned for better quality. If anyone can help or point me in the right direction to find these I would be grateful. Photographs are proposed to be hung in the KHS meeting room, frame size 8x10 inches.
As a final item, the KH Archive would be grateful if meeting members would consider loaning any photographs, reports, papers or any other material in their possession, which may be suitable for inclusion in the Archive. Originals would be appreciated but copies would also be very useful. It would be extremely useful if photographs could carry a description of the photo along with any relevant names, dates, places and events.

Memorabilia and 200 Club
Report for 2014/2015
Memorabilia
It has been another very slow year with regards to selling items of memorabilia and whilst this may well be due to recessionary times it is none the less disappointing. It is to be hoped that now things appear to be getting better we can rectify this state of affairs.
All items are now available from the school uniform shop and can be obtained direct from me at 1 Denbigh Court, White Hill Avenue, Bexhill on Sea, TN39 3RZ. Telephone: 01424 844238. My email is This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
I have made myself available at all committee and social events throughout the year. Full list of goodies is on the KHSD website and by calling me or “stopping me to buy one”.
200 Club
I have and always urge all to enter the 200 Club, which is a prime source of income to the Centenary Trust Fund. Just to remind you the entry is £12 (that is 23 pence a week) and 50% goes directly in to the CTF. Last year’s contribution was £120 after a 1st prize of £48, 2nd £36, 3rd £24 and 4th £12 but if we could encourage 200 entries then the contribution to the CTF would be £1200 after paying out a 1st prize of £350 and 6 other cash prizes. Many thanks to those who contribute regularly and hopefully we may see some new names this year.
REMINDER
The Kingham Hillians are running a Quiz on the evening of the AGM (Saturday 6 June 2015) and will include a Raffle. All receipts in aid of the Centenary Trust Fund. I am always open to new ideas to promote the KHA and ultimately benefit those most in need.
