Cultural Evening

Beer and wine tasting at The Chequers, Churchill 21.4.10

Sixth form members of the Octagon Academic Society experienced an amazing evening of culture, fine wines and education. We attended The Chequers Village pub for a talk by a sommelier and two local breweries for a night of wine and beer tasting.

We started with wine tasting and were taught techniques in helping us to understand how to distinguish various qualities, flavours and whether the wine was young or mature. We were educated in the subtle differences in wine between other cultures and tasted Champagne, sauvignon, pinot noir, chardonnay, merlot, shiraz and syrah. This was followed with an educational talk from two Hook Norton brewers about the process of producing beer and ales and there was an interactive mini lesson on micro-biology. It was then time to sample famous ales from Hook Norton Brewery and also lager from The Cotswolds Brewing Co. and had an excellent talk from the owner.

Octagon members were then treated by the landlady to a wonderful fish supper. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening and was surprisingly well attended by staff and our Headmaster! Very late in the evening the Housemaster of Sheffield was heard to quote Benjamin Franklin when he stated that ‘beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy’!
