‘The best Sevens rugby seen on a KHS playing field in the last 4 years…’

rugby thmThe headline is a quote from a number of the rugby coaching staff as they watched the Sheffield senior team win the coveted inter-house rugby trophy for this year. The boys had spent many practice sessions reminding themselves of the tactical differences between Sevens and the 15 man game they had been playing all term.

Their hard work more than paid off and they were worthy winners – although watching their final match against Norwich House in the dwindling light did nothing for my health.

The manner of their victory was very pleasing not just because of the quality of their play and teams-man-ship but because of the way they conducted themselves with their opponents. Their respect and consideration was not always matched by the Sheffield staff on the side-lines who sometimes let their enthusiasm get the better of them. One of our tutors, Michael Durant, was almost sent to the stands by Mr Stannard at one point!

Although not quite reaching those dizzy heights, our intermediate team did us proud as well. The Year 9s were allocated to their senior houses earlier in the term and this was the first time that they were able to wear the red of Sheffield House. We undoubtedly have some of the best rugby players in the school in those year groups, with their coaches referring to them as genuine ‘match winners’ when they represent Kingham Hill in the full 15 man version of the game each week. Unfortunately, they are mostly large forwards who are not pre-disposed to being effective 7s players. Unlucky, boys!
