Arthur E C Meehan

Charles MeehanIt is with great sadness that I have to tell you of the peaceful passing of my father Arthur Ernest Charles Meehan on the 31st October 2011 at the age of 89.

Arthur was born on Kingham Hill on the 12th April 1922 in the bailiff's cottage. Arthur's father was Frederick Arthur Meehan who worked on the estate and was himself and Old Boy. Kingham Hill archives show that Frederick entered the School on the 30th August 1902 at the age of 9 along with his brother Ernest who was 11. Arthur's sister Esmee was also born on the estate and worked for much of her life in the school refectory.

On leaving school on The Hill, Arthur was apprenticed to Lainchburys in Kingham and then transferred as civilian trainee aircraft engineer with the Air Ministry at RAF Little Rissington circa 1938. The war saw him transferred in 1942 to the Fleet Air Arm workshops, Fleetlands in Gosport.

After the war he transferred to the Royal Air Force as an aircraft engineer. Following his RAF service he lived and worked in Swanage on the railway until he retired.

Arthur was a devoted family man married to his beloved wife Caroline who survives him. They had been married 65 years. Arthur and Caroline had three sons Richard, Peter and Geoffrey.

Arthur never forgot his upbringing on The Hill and lived his life in the principals to which he was brought up and educated; in honesty, decency, modesty, kindness and respect. He was a gentleman and a gentle man, he is greatly missed.

Yours Sincerely
Richard Meehan
