World Book Day 1 tmbTuesday 23rd of April is designated World Book Day by UNESCO, also being Shakespeare and Cervantes’ Birthdays. Kingham Hill celebrated with a WBD Chapel, dress up and two author events.

Both students and staff dressed up as a book character, which resulted in a rather interesting- looking Chapel. Mr Rees and Mr Elliot hosted Chapel with groups of students talking about their costumes and why they loved the character they’d chosen. Chapel was invaded by characters from The Hobbit, including a booming Gandalf, big footed Sam, Frodo and finally a fantastically creepy Gollum.

Our first author visit was from Marcus Sedgwick, who spoke to Years 7, 8 and 9. Students heard about where he gets his inspiration and how he approaches his writing with careful planning and research. Students asked some interesting questions and after the talk Marcus signed books.

In the evening we had a lovely buffet for Years 10, 11 and Sixth Form, and welcomed Meg Rosoff. Meg talked about her life and how it didn’t quite go in the straight line she expected as a teenager, and her very different way of approaching writing. Students had some fantastic questions for Meg, who stayed for some time after to chat and sign books.
