Suffolk lunch June smlOn Sunday 2nd June, a group of KHS Old Boys who live in the East Anglia region met for a lunch reunion at the White Horse Inn in Whepstead. It was a wonderful opportunity for members of the Kingham Hill community to come together, renew acquaintes and form new friendships over a pint of Suffolk ale and some excellent food.

Group Rohilla_Day_2012_smThe forecast for the day was 'cloudy but dry', and when John, Eileen and I arrived at KHS about 9.50, it certainly was that. John and I went up to our archive room where we met James and Margaret Woolliams, Alex and Katrina Mathers, Simon Briggs and John Hughes. Tony and Julie soon joined us.

Final details for Sunday 30th Septembers' Rohilla Day Reunion

Closing Date for Bookings is the 19th September

Old Boys, Girls, Teachers and Staff are invited to join with us on this special day to remember the Rohilla, and those tragically lost all those years ago; by annually holding this reunion on the last Sunday each September on 'Rohilla Day'.

The day is not just for people who actually remember those who were lost it is also for any former student or member of staff from our unique club, 'those who lived or worked at the school', an opportunity to meet or reunite.

Group PhotoPatron : Lord Adonis of Camden

Over 40 attended our reunion and over fifty tickets were sold so we were pleased with the response.

The school kindly allowed us to use the Sixth Form area, which worked very well and created a real family gathering atmosphere.

KHA Reunion 2012 Cricket Match:

We're a few players short of a full team for the OBG (Old Boys & Girls) to play the school on KHA Reunion day, Saturday 23rd June. Anyone who is free that day, or who has already arranged to come, how about getting a little closer to that crack of willow on leather than you had previously planned, grab your whites and have a game instead of just watching?

Any takers, please contact Ed Wormington on:

"What a difference a nice day makes !"

Oh how the weather smiled for the last weekend of September.

We remember the Rohilla, and those tragically lost all those years ago; by annually holding this reunion on the last Sunday each September on 'Rohilla Day'.

Lest we forget.

The first 'Rohilla', the 7 ton steamship HMHS Rohilla, was a hospital troop ship which became the focus of the most famous RNLI rescue in the North East.

At 4am on 29th October 1914 in heavy seas and gale force winds the HMHS Rohilla carrying 229 passengers and crew struck rocks near to Whitby and began to break up. The RNLI Henry Vernon based at Tynemouth, one of 6 lifeboats but the only motorboat, was launched in worsening gale force winds in a last ditch effort to rescue the final 50 people from the sinking ship.

Rohilla Day

In September 1959 whilst returning from a sailing holiday from the Channel Isles, the yacht Rohilla a 16 ton converted R.N.L.I. lifeboat was tragically lost at sea together with all hands. Those being a member of school staff supported by a second adult and five pupils from school. In 2008 it was requested by former pupils that a Sunday morning chapel service, followed by a lunch reunion be arranged; similar to those held in the 1950's and 1960's. In October that year this was arranged and supported by 35 people. Repeated in September last year, proving so successful with 60 people attending the lunch, and by the afternoon numbers had risen to 65 former pupils and staff.

As you may know the school celebrates 125 years this year.

There are many events being organised to mark the occasion and these will include special events for Old Boys and Girls as well as their relatives and friends of The Hill.

The KHA have just announced the details of Founder's Day being held on the 18th and 19th of March.

Please see the KHA area for details and how you can join us for lunch in the dinning room, a trip down memory lane!

Were you there?

It started off as a dry, promising day, but being the Hill became very chilly quickly. We, being John Timmins and his wife Eileen and myself, arrived about 9.45, swiftly followed by Neil Lakeman. Within a very short time Elizabeth Fuller and her party of ex Clyde arrived and we all introduced ourselves.

New comments (5) from people who attended the event have been added.

Latest update 60 people now  to attend, click 'read more'.
